The above picture is one of the EXPEDIT IKEA Book Cases in my design
studio. We gave it a little face lift added legs and crown moulding to top & bottom.
This is what an EXPEDIT book case from IKEA originally looks like.
I added 2-1/2" crown moulding at the to.
On the bottom I added 4" moulding and 8" legs.
I have two bookcases, I adore them for books, magazines, fabric samples or anything I might need. The baskets i keep my office supplies are from IKEA as well.
The added touches makes a huge difference-don't you think?
What a clever idea that transformed a perfectly utilitarian bookcase into a fabulously stylish one! Great job!

ReplyDeleteI love it, can I ask how you attached the legs?
ReplyDeleteCandi...attach lets with nails..maybe some wood glue. Make sure they are on tightly. Love how they turned out-so custom looking with the legs and moldings. love peggy
ReplyDeleteThis looks great. I found this doing a search for Expedit and Crown Molding as I was curious to see how others may have tried this. Where did you find the legs? Is there a board below the bottom of the case or did you nail them directly to the Expedit?
ReplyDeleteThank you AWC...We made the legs on the bottom of the IKEA book case..we nailed the legs onto the bottom of the Expedit. Please ask any questions and I will answer if I can! xx
ReplyDeleteThanks! I do have a few more questions actually. Did you pick any special kind of wood for the legs? What white paint did you use to match the Expedit? Lastly, how close to the back of the Expedit did you nail the legs? (We have some unusually tall and thick baseboard molding in our house that prevent the Expedit from lining up flush against the wall. I'm hoping to add legs tall enough and set back far enough from the back of the Expedit to allow the case to clear the baseboard.)
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry this is late getting to you. I did not pick any special leg for the wood..I think it was Alder then we painted them..match the white color-I think it was ICI(which is Gliddens now)paint, as you know there are lots of white colors. I put the legs at the corners of the bookcase. Hope this helps. Again forgive the late reply.
ReplyDeleteThanks! It helps very much. My wife and I just put together our Expedits today (which are exactly the same size as yours) and yikes! - they're VERY heavy! I plan on embellishing a little bit on what you did and will share my results (if they succeed, lol). I hope that by the time we're finished they will look "built-in."
ReplyDeleteThank you again for your tips as well as your inspiration!
Hi AWC...send pictures of the final product, I am excited for you both. I am certain they will succeed+so thrilled I could help! xx peggy
